With safety a priority, Chakota-TRC's riding instructors, specially trained horses and caring volunteers, we offer therapeutic riding and horsemanship skills to individuals with a variety of disabilities.  These activities give a sense of freedom and independence while enabling the participant to experience accomplishments, interact socially and learn new skills in a pleasurable environment.

What is Therapeutic Horsemanship?

Caring for horses, riding, driving, grooming and other activities are good for everyone!  For individuals with disabilities, they have physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional benefits.  Horses minister to the mind, body and spirit in many ways.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Horses are special in that a horses gait (or movement when it walks) most closely imitates the human walk.  The repetitive motion of a horse at a walk stimulated the rider's spine and brain to help improve balance and coordination.  Heat from a horse's back helps relax muscles prone to spasms.
